This is what humanity sounds like

The Norwegian composer Thomas Bergersen’s album Humanity Chapter I is a start to one of his biggest projects, Humanity. It consists of seven chapters, two of which have been released. All chapters explore a different aspect to human life through music. The second track on Chapter I, We Are One, includes a part of President Harry Truman’s speech on civil rights. This piece sets up the tone for Chapter I since the main themes of the album are unity and freedom.

The music itself does a spectacular job of bringing those themes to life. Bergersen has combined many genres and music styles from cultures all over the world, which emphasizes the theme of unity. Freedom can be felt everywhere. The strings and vocals of Wings sound like the embodiment of freedom itself, and the name of the first track, Eleutheria, actually means freedom in Greek.

L’Appel Du Vide, which means “call of the void” is the most dark piece of music in Chapter I. Majority of the tracks are upbeat and happy, and this creates a great contrast between them and L’Appel Du Vide. The piece has a main piano theme, some strings, vocals and an electric guitar. The music feels sad and even hopeless.

Orbital is very different from the other pieces on this album. It has actual English lyrics and it could be labeled as electronic dance music. It is a remake of an earlier song of Bergersen’s. The lyrics are a bit dull and generic, but the melody is beautiful.

However, even if there are several amazing tracks on this album, the most breathtaking one is Mountain Call. It combines woodwinds, electric instruments, vocals and even bagpipes. Mountain Call is epic instrumental music at its best. It is impossible not to get chills from hearing this masterpiece.

Thomas Bergersen has again shown his skills in conveying emotion through music. Chapter I is a great start to the Humanity series. It does not reveal everything but leaves you eager to hear what is yet to come.
