Hozier: Hozier (2014)

Hozier is an Irish singer on their twenties. He’s a son of a musician and has been surrounded by music from a very young age. He joined a band while 15 and nowadays is multi-instrumentalist and a global attention getting songwriter. He has released three albums but two of them are just different variations from each other.

Recently I’ve been listening to the first album of Hozier named Hozier (2014). Andrew Hozier-Byrne broke through with a song called Take Me To Church (2013) which is the first piece of the album. I had heard the song when it first came but I started to listen to the whole album when my friend sent me another song from it.

There are 13 songs on the record. The genre is alternating from soulful rock in Take Me To Church to peaceful indie in Like Real People Do. Someone New is joyful and always makes me smile. To me it represents how anything can and needs to be loved in a non-romantic way and by paying attention to those you suddenly feel more alive: “And so I fall in love with a little ol’ little but every day with someone new”. One of the most interesting tracks is the one finishing the complex: Cherry Wine - Live. You can hear birds chirping in the background. It’s derived from the recording place, a roof. Hozier was there alone recording the song by himself.

Hozier writes his songs by himself and works through even difficult topics such as abusive relationships. The whole album is a sensitive and beautiful entity.

  1. Thank you for the review! You brought out your personal standpoint to the songs and also offered just the right amount of information about the artist and his work. It was nice to hear about the recording process as well. Hozier was totally unfamiliar to me before but maybe I'll try and listen to something new now!
